JSS: Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity for this interview.
SPnews staff: Give us a snapshot bio.
JSS: I'm a 45-year-old Southern woman who hates it when I see myself or my
peers portrayed in books and movies as either post-antebellum debutantes or
barefoot hillbillies ala Daisy Duke, so all my heroines are smart,
unpretentious women who refuse to be anyone but themselves. I've lived all
my life in southern Alabama, I'm the mother of three gifted children, and
I've been married for 24 years to the love of my life. So when I write about
true love, I'm writing what I know.
SPnews staff: Your novel, "Different Roads", addresses a very common
thread of contemplation. What drove you to explore it further?
JSS: I had two loving parents who gave me an extremely happy childhood
filled with love, so I don't know why I had this motherless, love-starved
little girl named Jaycee in my head and my heart, but she wanted me to tell
her story, so I had to do it. And I wrote it just the way she told it to me
without apology for her outrageous behavior, so I am immensely grateful to
my publisher for seeing the big picture and not asking me to sell her out by
making her less controversial. Just as Rascal Flatts expresses so eloquently
in their beautiful song, God surely blesses the broken road that leads us to
where we're supposed to be.
SPnews staff: On a similar theme, how do you believe becoming a published
author has changed your life?
JSS: In addition to the many wonderful people I've met and become friends
with through online writing communities, I met my best friend and writing
partner, Lee Ann Ward, through our shared trials with another publisher,
which only furthers my belief that everything happens for a reason. And
although I was always a quiet, shy girl who avoided the spotlight, the
necessity for author participation in promotions has forced me to become
quite intrepid in terms of garnering attention for my books.
SPnews staff: Do you have a routine or do you write on impulse?
JSS: I write every day, but since I'm also a wife and mother, life sometimes
intrudes on my writing time, so I always have a notebook with me for writing
on the run. When I'm in the middle of a novel, I've been known to fake
illnesses in order to stay home and write. By the way, does anyone know how

SPnews staff: Where do your ideas come from, experience or research?
JSS: So far, my initial ideas have all come from personal experience (or
insistent voices in my head, in the case of "Different Roads") but I'm a
stickler for accuracy and details, so I also do research for any sub-plots I
add. Consequently, I now know more than I ever expected to know about the
timber industry, antebellum architecture, and Alexander Hamilton's role in
the Revolutionary War. However, I didn't have to do any research for all the
sports content in my books. Although I don't do sports myself (except
bowling), I'm a professional spectator.
SPnews staff: With that in mind, how do you think it shapes your work?
JSS: I know my strength is definitely in character development, and that's
because all my characters are so real to me that they come across that way
to readers. Since my characters tell me the story and what needs to happen
next, all I have to do is make sure the facts are straight.
